Saturday Beach Yoga November 3 2017

Tomorrow morning join in at the open level beach yoga class at 9 a.m. on the 5th Street EAST beach! The class will be led by Samantha Kreshover. Bring a large towel, water, sunblock, and maybe a sweatshirt or jacket because it’ll be 66-70 degrees. Beach and cloud blankets are welcome too! There is no more perfect time for a beach yoga class than this amazingly crisp Fall weekend!

If you can’t make this class check out our schedule and see when you can! We’re on a reduced public beach class schedule for the Fall and Winter seasons, but will happily work with you to schedule a private class for yourself, your family, or your friends. Whether you’re a local with odd hours or visiting the Charleston, SC – Folly Beach area on vacation, we’d love to schedule a special class just for you!

Yoga be the sea. Ahhhh…. how relaxing is that? The ambience between the ocean’s lapping waves, the breeze, the salty air kissing your skin on the “Edge of America”…

Wow. I think I just got all gushy about my own job! Ha! It really is such an amazing treat to be able to teach on the sand on Folly Beach. Every time I walk toward the beach I get that some giddiness I did when I was a kid.

Here are a few quick tips for our public (and private) yoga classes on the beach:

  • Please use the restroom before you get to the beach! The 5th Street East beach access does not have a public restroom.
  • We recommend bringing a towel or two for the beach. Though you may enjoy layering and putting the yoga mat on top, the towel’s texture really works better on the sand.
  • Please bring plenty of water and arrive fully hydrated.
  • Apply sunscreen before the class.–and  if you forget to apply it don’t be shy about asking others to borrow some.
  • If at any time you feel lightheaded or unwell, take a rest. The sun’s rays are much more intense with the reflection from the ocean and sand.
  • Feel free to wear your swimsuit under or as your yoga wear on the beach. if you’re comfortable practicing in it.  You will often find our teachers heading out to surf or swim after (and sometimes before!) the class
  • Updates for weather on all of our outdoor yoga classes will be posted on our Facebook page. This is the quickest way for us to get information out as the weather does sometimes rapidly change on the island.

Folly Beach Yoga Classes Charleston SC

This week on Folly Beach we’re offering 3 beach yoga classes open to all levels.

  • Sunset Beach Yoga with Matt Foley – Tuesday – 7 p.m.
  • Beach Yoga with Matt Stevens Friday – 6:30 p.m.
  • Beach Yoga with Matt Foley Saturday – 9 a.m.

All of our beach yoga classes are weather dependent and meet at the 5th Street East beach access. Both paid lot parking and some free street side parking are available. Remember to bring a large towel, or mat if you prefer, and plenty of water. You may choose to pre-purchase passes online or at the beach.

We will also be offering a free beach yoga class for parents and caregivers of children and adults who have autism on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Sweet summer nights. The perfect time to let kids be kids and explore whatever and wherever their wandering feet and minds can go. This evening the kids entertained themselves with sticks and kicking their feet into the Folly River from the dock while Mom and Dad practiced yoga in the yard. Quiet summer nights and yoga on Folly Beach. Can’t complain about that!

Folly Beach Yoga for Autism Parents

We wanted to share another reminder of our Folly Beach yoga class for autism parents and caregivers. The class is free to all autism parents and caregivers and meets Thursdays at 6 pm at the beach on 5th Street East. No experience with yoga is necessary. Being a towel, or mat if you prefer, and plenty of water to drink before, during, and after the class.

Yoga for Postpartum Weight Loss

Weight Loss Yoga Post Partum Folly Beach IslandFollowing a difficult pregnancy in my early 20s I found myself significantly overweight, weighing 220 pounds at almost 5’4″. I was unhappy, unhealthy, and discovering how truly difficult losing weight after pregnancy can be!

A 104 pound weight loss later gave me a second chance at life–without the use of surgery or pills.

I feel very strongly that yoga, when practiced regularly, is one of the most effective exercises to rejuvenating your body, losing weight, and feeling empowered and strong after the birth of a child. Regardless of whether you practice at home or join us at Folly Beach Island Yoga, yoga will tone the entire body. The abdominal wall is toned from the inside as well as out. This leads toward a flatter, firmer stomach as those abs begin to act as a girdle pulling inward. Arms are naturally toned in the holding and transitioning between poses with additional sculpting of the glutes (butt) and thighs. It also helps you to shave visual weight off by improving your posture naturally.

Although I tried to carefully keep my weight in check during my subsequent pregnancies, the truth is that with the next two babies I gained 90 and 60 pounds respectively…oops. Thankfully I’d had some practice with losing weight–ha! I say this because it’s so easy to get intimidated in this world of airbrushed fitness models and plastic surgery. Start where you are. You don’t need to be able to bend yourself into a pretzel or be an Instagram star to begin this journey. Yoga should never be intimidating, and it should be a very personal and achievable experience.

Yoga Classes on Folly Beach

We’re excited to announce that we are now offering public, small group, and private yoga classes and instruction on the beach. Public open level classes will be held on the beach at 5th Street East, Folly Beach, SC. A paid parking lot is available, as are some limited free street side parking spaces. Remember to park with the flow of traffic if you choose street side parking. Please see our schedule for public class times.

For beach yoga remember to bring a large towel (or mat if you prefer), sunscreen, and plenty of water to the beach. Classes meet on the sand.

Beginning Memorial Day weekend (May 27-28), we will hold additional classes at St. James Gate Irish Pub upstairs at 11 Center Street, Folly Beach. On Saturday mornings catch us upstairs at 11 a.m. and Sundays you can join an open level class at 10 a.m. just in time to catch the brunch hours menu downstairs!
